✦ Synopsis

From the second law of thermodynamics the author deduces expressions which show,' that not only S but also ~ and U can be obtained from caloric measurements. For a and U measurements of three kinds offbeat quantities are generally needed. But in the important case in which =/{(U--a.)

IT}, measurements at constant field only, or measurements at constant temperature combined with measurements of the specific heat at zero field, will be sufficient to obtain those parts of ~ and U that depend on temperature.
