Abstract

The predictive equations of numerical forecasting are cast in differential form and do not have simple analytic solutions. In practice, the finite‐difference analogues of the differential equations are solved using a grid and the grid length has been chosen so that significant features of the synoptic chart are reasonably defined by values at the grid points of contour height or pressure. The purpose of this note is to enquire into the grid lengths that should be chosen so as to make the best estimate of the derivatives which appear in the equations.
