โœฆ Synopsis

Various aspects of the forced response of a damped one-dimensional periodic structure are considered. Initially, the attenuation produced by damping is investigated, and it is shown that this may be of the same order of magnitude as the localization factor produced by structural irregularity. An efficient approximate method for predicting the energy level in each bay of a forced periodic structure is then presented. This method is based on vibrational energy flow, and excellent agreement with exact results is demonstrated for a periodic beam system. The effect of damping on the response is investigated and it is found that the benefits which would normally be expected from an increase in damping can be offset to some extent by an increase in vibration localization (or concentration near the excitation point) arising from the attenuation factor. It is also found that a decrease in the pass band width leads to an increase in response for both harmonic and broadband random loading.

The effects of blade-to-blade variations in the damping coefficients on the forced response of a bladed disk are investigated. It is found that this non-uniformity of the disk can lead to variations in the blades' amplitudes of response which are similar, in magnitude, to those obtained with stiffne

THE RESPONSE OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL PERIODIC

This analysis is concerned with the response of an infinite two-dimensional periodic structure to point harmonic loading; initially a damped finite system is considered and the system size is then allowed to tend to infinity. It is shown that the response in the far field can be expressed in terms o

THE VIBRATION OF PLATES ON TWO-DIMENSION

The vibration of a thin plate lying on point supports is considered. The supports form an orthogonal, two-dimensionally periodic array, and can exert both translational and rotational constraints. The response to a convected harmonic pressure is determined by using Fourier transforms and the structu

This paper is concerned with the semi-active control of structural vibrations via variable damping elements. Such an approach is insensitive to the spillover problem encountered in fully-active systems. An algorithm based on the sliding mode theory is developed and analysed. Comparing to the ad hoc
