✦ Synopsis

Usirg the statistical mechanical formulation of Triezenbeg and Zwvanzig, we argue that the "intrinsic" or "bare" width of the Iiquid-vapor interface in the Buff-Lavett-StiIlinger capillary model may be identified as the interfacial width described by the "van der Waals-IEke" theories. A great deal of theoretical attention has recently been drawn to the problem of better delineating the roIe of capillary wave fiuctuations in the ultimate theoretical determination of the structure and thermodynamics of the liquid/vapor interface [I -7]_ During this Same period, a different theoretical viewpoint [9-161 for describing the Iiquid/vapor interface has evoked from the focal free energy approach originally postulated by van der Waals [8] approximately one

Based on a general theory given in an earlier paper, we present results of extensive calculations of the dynamical structure factor S(qw) for liquid argon. Detailed comparison is made with experimental and molecular dynamics data. Good agreement is found except for the smallest wavevectors, where te
