✦ Synopsis

WITH your permzsszon, Ladles and Gentlemen, I should hke to present a few results of the apphcatzon of the pnnczples of electrochemistry to world pohtlcs This IS a sensitive, not tosayanexploslvematter However, I ~111 try to deal with It as a representative of a country which for 150 years has been able to mamtam neutrality, ze pH 7

An observatzon of current condztzons shows that the east 1s red and that the west is therefore m the blues Usmg the pH-scale Just referred to and litmus paper as an mdlcator, this means that the solutzon m the west 1s a caustic lye while m the east zt 1s a sour one As a matter of fact, the whole pH-scale 1s represented While such buffer states as Sweden and Switzerland are neutral, pH m the far east seems to be about minus 2

Why IS this so? We find the explanation zf we analyse the meamng of the words anode and cathode Anode 1s denved from a Greek word meaning sunrise and cathode from another Greek word meaning sunset It zs also well known that the anode generates acid and the cathode alkali Hence, the whole picture 1s quite clear East, with sunrise, ze the anode, IS acid and red while the west, wrth sunset, ze the cathode, IS alkaline and blue

Other observations, such as on anodzc and cathodic control and protection of different parts of the world, on energy barners, moving boundanes and parting hmzts, on the reduction of nob&y by mass action law, on the actzvzty of secret addition agents, on generals' corroszon by petting attacks etc are all zn agreement with this electrochemzcal theory And so IS the fact, Ladies and Gentlemen, that the anodlc land of Russia some 46 years ago suddenly changed from a passive mto an active state As to the existing tension between the east and the west today, zt seems to be mamly due to different ideas of the operatton of local cells In the west, the galvanic cell idea 1s prevalent, ze local cells are left to operate on thezr own under private enterprzse, even zf sometimes they should cause corroszon In the east on the other hand, the electrolytzc cell idea IS favoured, ze productzon under planned electrolyszs Stray currents and electrolytzc attack are probably not unknown, however One very important concluszon results from these conszderatlons In an electrochemzcal cell the anode and the cathode are both necessary and must co-operate Szmdarly, m the solutzon of the problems of the world the east and the west must co-exzst and co-operate Let us therefore now establish a hquzd Junction and raise our glass electrodes to anodzc and cathodic co-operation for the electrolysis of world peace Skaalr * After-dinner speech, delivered at the Banquet of the 14th Meeting of CITCE, Moscow, August 1963 THE Apphed Electrochemzstry group of the "Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemzker" will hold a meeting m Heidelberg or Ludwzgschafen (Germany) on 22-23 October lS64 The theme of the meeting wzll be Electrochemzcal Engzneering and Electrochemzstry of Fused Salts Further mformatlon can be obtained from Geschaftsstelle der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemlker , 6000 Frankfurt a M 9, Postfach ~075, Bundesrepublzk Deutschland

Ruminations by a quantum chemist are offered on his forays into the treacherous territory of the global fusion power research community. His and a colleague's proposal for a colliding beam fusion reactor is explained. His experiences hold general lessons about the treatment an innocent scientist can
