✦ Synopsis

Electrical properties of poly(ethylene naphthalate 2,6-dicarboxylate) (PEN) were investigated in low (E \ 1 MV cm~1) and high Ðeld (E [ 1 MV cm~1) regions under d.c. stress, with special emphasis on ageing processes. In the high Ðeld regime, electrical conduction involves hot electron transport leading to polymer electroluminescence. Degradation occurs due to the conduction process. ModiÐcations of the low Ðeld conduction were investigated after exposure of the polymer to corona discharges, or UV irradiation. It is shown that ageing under corona discharges a †ects the conduction greatly.

## Abstract An optical nondestructive strain measurement technique was performed to analyze the mechanical deformation induced by an electrical field within the insulating materials. Poly(ethylene naphthalene 2,6‐dicarboxylate) (PEN) films were then subjected to constant electrical fields right up
