Abstract

The pressure derivatives of the elastic constants of CsCl, NaCl, and ZnS lattices were calculated as functions of the difference in sizes of ions and the range of the repulsive forces. General conditions for the negative pressure dependence of the shear constants are examined. The agreement with the experimental results is reasonable, which indicates that the ion‐size difference will have to be taken into account in all future considerations of the elastic properties of compounds.
