✦ Synopsis

We have developed a simple model which explains the behavior of azeotropie batch distillations. The model is in agreement with known experimental results and explains features of the distillation process which have previously been considered anomalous. The model can be used to design hatch distillation processes operating at either infinite or finite reflux ratios.

The dynamic behaviour of binary distillation in the vicinity of an equilibrium state is investigated. The genera1 linear state equations and the principles of solution are given. These are applied to a more detailed study of a theoretical nonlinear process for which the response of compositions to s

## Abstract An approach for the optimal configuration and sequencing of complex batch‐distillation processes is presented. The proposed method is based on formulating a mixed‐logic dynamic optimization problem in which a performance index is minimized subject to a disjunctive dynamic model and cons

The maximum principle of Pontryagin has been used to calculate the optimal route through a batch distillation under specified conditions. These are: (1) A binary mixture with no hold-up and constant boil up rate. (2) A binary mixture with no held-up but the boil up rate is a linear function of the s
