## Abstract Commonly used electrochemical methods of determination of characteristic potentials for pitting are briefly described and compared. The possibility to predict an βabsoluteβ and/or relative pitting resistance of a material from measurements of the characteristic potentials is discussed.

Abstract
Various characteristic pitting potentials are defined which may be observed in a system simultaneously. Following these definitions, galvanostatic polarization techniques are expected to result in potential oszillations whenever the pit nucleation potential, U~np~, differs from the critical potential for pit repassivation, U~cp~, of a system.
With nickel polarized in neutral, chloride containing sulphate solution the electrode potential oscillates periodically. The lower limit responds to the critical potential, U~cp~, determined by potentiostatic measurements.
