It is shown that in the calcuiation of the contribution to the Kerr effect in polar liquids by the hyperpalarizabilities, the effective field should be taken equal to the sum of the Lorcntz Field and the reaction tieId. Calculation of first hyperpolarizabilitieson this basis by combining values of the Kerr constant with values of the alignment from electrically induced tine splittiag irt NMR, $tds for strongiy pofar mdccutes QS r=r 4 D) values that are smaller by an order of magnitude than those from previous c~lcufiltio~s on the same effects, but that compare more favourabb with other data.
