We examine the conditions for the validity of the sudden approximation and investigate the utility and validity of the weak-coupling limit of the sudden approximation. We also discuss purely classical calculations in the sudden approximation, showing that these contain the inter-relations recently e

✦ Synopsis
It is shown that within the coordinate representation sudden approximation. the general amplitude S,,l.,. ,,r,r is apressed in terms of system dependent dynamical Ltcrors, \ hich arc the amplitude S,z,i,uu, and system indcpdndent fattors which contain ti momentum transfer information.
Recently
Gerber et al_ [ 11 have derived an energy sudden approximation fbr atom-surface scattering along the lines of Secrest's approach to the 10s treatment [2] of atom-diatom scattering_ The IOS approach to atomdiatom scattering has also been considered by GoIdflam et al. [31 where they have shown that the general amplitudes can be written as sums of products of system dependent dynamical factors (the amplitudes for scattering out of the j = 0 rotor state) and system independent factors (which contain information on angular momentum transfer). The purpose of this note is to explore a similar factorization of the Gerber et al_ [I] sudden approximation for atom-surface scattering. We remark in passing that our final results have been obtained independently by Gerber and co-workers [4] by different means and used in developing a procedure for imerting diffraction data to obtain the atom-surface potential_ The coordinate representation sudden approximation for atom-surface scattering expression for the S-matrix:
