β¦ Synopsis
In a recent "1etter"l White and Morrow suggest that the conflicting NMR results obtained by us 2 and by a Swiss group3 on cyclotetraglycyl may be due to the presence of a protonated form in our case. This makes it necessary to draw the attention to some already published facts overlooked by these and other authors and to propose an alternative explanation of the disagreement.

## Abstract Giving explicit consideration to the lone pairs of the carbonyl oxygen of the amide group it is found that the polarity of the amide group resides essentially in the lone pair. As a confirmation, the lone pairs of the ester group are also found to account for most of its polarity. This
The conformation in the crystdine state and in solution of the sterically congested tetramethylpiperidinederived arnidc group of the symmetric diamide I formed from 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (b) and 1,2,5-thiadiarole-3,4-dicarbonyl dichloride (c), and of the mixed diamide 11 derived from b, c, a
Interrelationships among the coupling between the amide I vibrations of peptide groups, the wavenumber A-E 1 di β erence of the amide I mode and the conformation of helical polypeptide chains were examined theoretically. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations were performed for a glycine dipep
