Abstract
Synthetic LiF crystals grown in high vacuum are irradiated with 13.5 MeV deuterons. The coloured layer is removed in 34 steps and the coloration spectrum measured after each step. No qualitative differences in the coloration spectra at different depths could be established. A new method for the determination of the thickness of the coloured layer is described and used to measure the thickness of the layer for the strongest coloration bands at 248nm (F band), 445 nm (M band), 316 nm (R~1~ band), and 378 nm (R~2~ band). The mean value of the average range was about (0.655 ± 0.001)mm. The thickness of the coloured layer is shown to be related to the depth of penetration of the deuterons.
