✦ Synopsis

The relation between the length of a counter and the width of its plateau is measured. From the results an explanation is derived for the well-known breakdown of vapour quenched counters at high overvoltages: probably the disturbing afterdischarges are triggered by complex ions or molecules which form in the field free region around the wire at high overvoltages.
