Abstract
Co(α‐methylstyrene‐acrylonitrile)polymers with about 46 mole‐% acrylonitrile and 45≦10^−3^M<417 were investigated by means of light‐scattering in tetrahydrofurane as a solvent. The Zimm plots obtained are presented. The mean square radius of gyration, 〈S^2^〉, and the molar mass were plotted according to linearization procedures based in turn upon the relations α^5^−α^3^=Cz, α^3^−1=C′z, and α^2^=1+Cz. As found in former investigations, the three extrapolation procedures yeild different values for the unperturbed dimensions 〈S^2^〉~0~/M and the excluded volume parameter β/m~S~^2^. For each specimen the value of the second virial coefficient was calculated using in turn each extrapolation result and the corresponding h(¯z) equation FKO,o, FKO,m, KY/YT, or KFSY. The equation based upon the KFSY theory yields values of the second virial coefficient which agree best with the measured data. This indicates that the unperturbed dimensions of the copolymer under investigation amount to 〈S^2^〉~0~/M=17.2·10^−18^ cm^2^ mol g^−1^.
