✦ Synopsis


Previous measurements of the current -voltage behaviour during anode effect in cryolite melts

were extended to other NaF/AlF, ratios and to pure sodium halides. In all systems the current-voltage curves had similar shapes, showing several maxima and minima. The AE voltage range in which cryolite extended from -3 10 -14OV, could be divided into three stages. Wow 5 5OV the current appeared to be concentrated at protruding areas on the anode and bright sparks were seen. At higher voltage (60 V) a stable glow discharge was observed followed by renewed sparking (-75 V) and finally a stable arc (-135V).

Violent voltage/current oscillations occurred in ranges where sparking was observed. The anode became overheated, reaching 18CWC at 100 V incryolite at 1010°C. The current decreased when the external pressure was lowered and the voltage at which a stable arc was lit was increased.
