โฆ Synopsis
which Galen wrote in his later years, his earliest literary effort dealt with the anatomy of the uterus, which he wrote for some midwives. He was quite young, probably in his early twenties, and was serving what would correspond today to a residency. He sometimes rewrote his earlier works and we do not know that the version in Kuhn's edition which is here translated is identical with the early x-ersion.
He relied heavily upon the observations of Herophilos whose works are not extant. We know, however, that Herophilos dissected human subjects whereas this source of material was not available in Galen's time. Nuch of Galen's description has the ring of authenticity from first hand obserration, and since he brings in comparative anatomy, it can be assumed that he disseoted monkeys as well as various domestic animals.
The translation is made from the Greek text, purposely avoiding all comparison with the Latin translation and no other translation appears to have been published. The editor takes full responsibility, therefore, for any inaccuracies, but Galen's meaning has seemed quite clear throughout, although some passages were a t first puzzling. The work is presented as if i t were written f o r this journal; the reacleimay write his own notes and comments.
Certain typographical conventions will be followed. The numbers in brackets refer to pages in the Kuhn edition (1821).
Greek words are spelled, usually a t first appearance, in Latin capitals. Titles of Galen's other works are in English quotes. Anatomical terms from the Paris Nomenclature for structures de-Additions and comments by the translator are in square brackets.
