โฆ Synopsis
This paper presents a solution for a semi-injinite plate containing a deep semi-
elliptic edge notch when the plate is under a uniaxial tension parallel to the edge. The solution is a direct solution composed of three parts, which is developedfrom Howland's method of successive approximations through two significant modi$cations. It is found that the present solution is more adaptable to numerical computation with regard to the depth ratio of the notch than other solutions known to exist. Numerical values of the stress concentration are givenfor a depth ratio up to 10.
