✦ Synopsis

of a closed structure-when the dendrite might still be considered a perfect crystal, because of temperature difference the A& branch for example has more translation vectors in the direction of growth than the CD branch. While the dendrite branches are becoming thicker, the temperature of the AB branch is getting nearer and nearer to the temperature of the CD branch, As a result of this, the AB branch will be longer and it, bends the two branches. After this, dislocations will rea,lly arise between the AD and BC branches, even outside the ABCDA closed structure.

Surface dissolution is thus expected to be faster in such localities. The probability of occurrence of dissolution figures on cold-worked samples is therefore likely to increase partly because of the increased number of dislocation sites on the surface, and partly because of the annealing out of the

Self-diffusion coefficients parallel (D,) and perpendicular (01) to the tetragonal axis were measured in paired samples of single-crystal indium in the range from 44" to 144°C. The ratio D,,/DL was found to be ~0.75 + 0.05 and was not noticeably temperature dependent. Thus the activation energies Q,
