Synopsis
While paramagnetic relaxation tm the whole has found satisfactory theoretical description, the data obtained at liquid helium temperatures are in several respects anomalous and in disagreement with the expectations. These data are also in conflict with recent observations on the saturation of microwave absorption.
On the basis of a suggestion, rejectedin 1941 by Van Vleck, it is argued that the bottleneck observed in the relaxation experiments at hquid helium temperatures may be the heat contact between a small group of low frequency crystal oscillators in contact with the magnetic spin system, on the one hand, and the constant temperature bath, oll the other. A very provisional analysis of this possibility leads to reasonable agreement with the available data.
