β¦ Synopsis
On-off intermittency is investigated in one-way coupled chaotic systems at the threshold of weak synchronization that is characterized by a fractal synchronization manifold. Unlike the conventional on-off intermittency, where the system dynamics is determined by escape of trajectories from an unstable smooth hyperplane, this intermittency is characterized by escape of trajectories from an unstable fractal manifold. Despite this difference, the main characteristics--distribution of laminar lengths and dependence of mean laminar length on the coupling strength---of both intermittencies are identical.

The discriminator lemma is normally used to prove lower bounds for circuits with small-weight threshold gates. In this note we adapt the lemma to circuits with a general (large-weight) threshold gate at the top. The new lemma is used to give a new proof of a previously known lower bound for the size
