โฆ Synopsis
In this paper the authors present a new approach for on-line monitoring of tool breakage in milling operations. It is based on recognizing changes in the pattern of the cutting force using a new kind of force sensing cutter holder which integrates a strain gauge and a transmitter. The regular periodic variation per tooth is filtered out by synchronized sampling, the peaks per tooth are computed. Two kinds of tool breakage detecting algorithms have been proposed, they are independent of changes in the cutting conditions, so the threshold for alarm can be easily set. The results of experiments confirm the practical applicability of the sensor and the detecting algorithms.
