✦ Synopsis

Finite groups, maximal class MSC (2010) 20D15

Let R be the ring Z[x]/ x p -1

x -1 = Z[x] and let a be the ideal of R generated by (x -1). In this paper, we discuss the structure of the Z[Cp ]-module (R/a n -1 )∧(R/a n -1 ), which plays an important role in the theory of p-groups of maximal class (see [2]-[5]). The generators of this module allow us to obtain the defining relations of some important examples of p-groups of maximal class with Y1 of class two. In particular we obtain the best possible estimates for the degree of commutativity of p-groups of maximal class with Y1 of class two.

## Abstract Let __G__ be a __p__ ‐group of maximal class of order __p__^__m__^ , __p__ ≠ 2, and __c__ (__G__) the degree of commutativity of __G__. Let __c__~0~ be the nonnegative residue of __c__ modulo __p__ – 1. In this paper, by using only Lie algebra techniques, we prove that 2__c ≥ m__ – 2__p

Apart from hyperovals and their duals there are only three classes of maximal arcs known in Desarguesian projective planes. Two classes are due to J. A. Thas and one to R. H. F. Denniston. We compute conjugacy classes in maximal parabolic subgroups of the general linear group. This computation proceeds by reducing to a "matrix problem." Such problems involve finding normal forms for matrices under a specified set of row and column operations. We solve the relevant matrix problem in sm

We show that S n has at most n 6Â11+o(1) conjugacy classes of primitive maximal subgroups. This improves an n c log 3 n bound given by Babai. We conclude that the number of conjugacy classes of maximal subgroups of S n is of the form ( 12 +o(1))n. It also follows that, for large n, S n has less than
