✦ Synopsis

Two formulations of continuum theories governing the bulk motion and evolution of an alloy in a state of mixed liquid and solid phases are compared, namely the recent theory of Bennon and Incropera and our earlier theory. Points where the formulations agree and disagree are highlighted. All effort is made to extract from the theories a non-controversial foundation on which future generalizations can be securely built.
