The evolution equations for a phase interface are discussed. Interfacial structure is neglected, as are thermal and compositional variations. The focus is on a new treatment of the inertial forces at the interface. * Cf. Gurtin and Struthers [4], Gurtin [7,12], Lusk [111. These papers have their roots in the statical (variational) treatments of materials scientists (cf. Leo and Sekerka [2] and the papers quoted therein).
