We analyse the problem of continuous elastic beam on unilateral elastic supports. The study is done in the appropriate analytical framework by using the functional analysis methods and the variational inequalities theory results.

โฆ Synopsis
A new method of determining the deflection and the natural frequencies of vibration for beams with many elastic supports is presented. The basic idea of the method is the use of the Dirac delta-function to introduce the concentrated loads applied to the beam by the elastic supports in the governing differential equation. This approach avoids the necessity of having to analyze the beam in many spans, consequently achieving economy of thought.

The continuous beam having elastic intermediate supports, equally spaced and of equal stiffness, is solved for the condition that they behave as rigid supports when the beam buckles under the action of an axial compressive force. The exact solution is given in closed form.
