✦ Synopsis
A theoretical investigation has been made of the nature of the u(AH) stretching frequency change in A-H...B hydrogea bonds on the substitution of D for H. An explanation of the correhtion between the c(AH)/u(AD) isotope effect and the Utah) frequency and also between u(AH)/u(AD) and the isotopic change of the equilibrium length R. of a hydrogen bond is proposed. The anomalously small isotope effect u(AH)/u(AD) = 1 in strong hydrogen bonds is explained.
