In this paper we determine the ranks of the incidence matrices tha~ belong to the following types of difference sets: "[Win prime power difference sets, biquadratie residues and biquadratic residues with O. We also prove a conjecture of Assmus and Key on the code generated by the hyperovals of PC_r(2, q).
