✦ Synopsis

It is shown that intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the, ' N-ii and the ortho carbonyl on the side chain of N'formylkynurenme and some parect compounds plays an nnportant role on then spectroscopic propertles. 'I3e fluorescence emission hmax is shifted by about 4000 cm-' m going from polar to non-polar solvents. This abnormally red-shifted fluorescence is attributed to an excited state proton transfer from the formamldo to the ortho carbonyl of the side chain.
