✦ Synopsis

It is shown by elementary stability analysis that it is permissible to omit the invariant quantity in a single irreversible reaction in the investigation of stability in the small.

By counterexamples, it is shown that omission of the invariants is improper in more complex systems. A customary statement in papers and books on chemical reaction engineering. that omission of the invariants is permissible, is thus disproved.
