β¦ Synopsis
The existence of an error in a proposed new approach to stripping theory is demonstrated.
Recently Butler, Hewitt, McKellar, and May (BHMM) have proposed a new method for analyzing deuteron stripping reactions (I). They seek to avoid some of the approximations inherent in the usual DWBA theory, particularly the neglect of internal deuteron distortion. The purpose of this note is to show that there is an error in the new approach which renders it invalid.
BHMM begin with the usual expression for the exact (d, p) reaction amplitude, where !Pd+ is an exact outgoing-wave solution of the Schrijdinger equation and y-h , k,) is an ingoing-wave solution of the Schriidinger equation with the neutron-proton interaction omitted:

The BHMM approach for (d,p) analysis is briefly presented in a form convenient for comparison with the preceding comments by Leonard S. Rodberg. The conclusion by Rodberg that the BHMM approach is invalid is shown not to be correct.
