Dickens' 2. roman fra 1838 handler om den forældreløse Oliver Twist, hans opvækst i fattighuset, til han sættes i lære hos en bedemand, hvorfra han flygter til London. I storbyen optages han i en bande lommetyve, ledet af jøden Fagin, og oplæres af denne og den brutale Sikes til forbryder. Ved tilfældets spil optages han dog hos pænere folk, som sætter sig for at udrede Olivers herkomst og give ham et bedre liv.
