Al Greenwood, 50 ans, est taxi dans un paisible petit village côtier d’Angleterre. C’est un homme qui a tout pour être heureux, et qui le serait certainement s'il n’était pas marié à l’encombrante Audrey. Aussi décide-t-il tout simplement un jour de s’en débarrasser en commettant le crime parfait. Le scénario est vite trouvé : profitant d’une des promenades quotidiennes de sa femme, il la précipitera du haut d’une falaise. Aussitôt dit, aussitôt fait, Al s’embusque sur le parcours habituel d’Audrey, surgit à son passage et la précipite dans le vide. Tout se passe comme prévu sauf... sauf qu’en rentrant chez lui, il tombe nez à nez avec sa femme qui lui annonce avoir exceptionnellement renoncé à sa petite ballade. Si il n’a pas tué Audrey, qui est donc sa victime ? Et comment va-t-il déjouer la perspicacité des enquêteurs, dans cette petite communauté où tout le monde se connaît ? Quant à sa femme, qui commence à trouver son comportement étrange, ne faut-il pas qu’il s’en débarrasse très vite, avant qu’elle ne nourrisse trop de soupçons ? Mais cela ne fera-t-il pas de lui un tueur en série ? Commence alors pour Al un long cauchemar, dont il est encore très loin de soupçonner l’issue. Avec ce premier roman jubilatoire, T. J. Middlteon nous propose un condensé d’humour noir très british doublé d’une intrigue palpitante.
