โฆ Synopsis
The displacement of vises to which a force of 50 Ibs. was applied was measured. The vertical displacements were small, being only โข oo5, .oo3, and .oo4 in. respectively for 2, 5ยฝ and 9 in. vises. The horizontal displacement for the application of 5o lbs. force were, for the same three vises, .o4, .o22 and .o48 in. The estimate is made that in sawing only about .o4 per cent. of the total work is expended in deforming the vise and bench. G.F.S.
