**Summary** Cardiopulmonary bypass has several associated deleterious effects that include a systemic inflammatory response, coagulopathy, central nervous system complications and a variable degree of end‐organ damage. The recent upsurge in interest in ‘beating‐heart’ surgery attempts to avoid these
