✦ Synopsis

The first studies of oestrogen receptor (ER) focused on measurements of levels in breast cancers and relationship to hormonal response, but the introduction of antibodies which can be used on fixed tissue has meant that ER can be studied in detail in normal and precancerous tissue. Cloning and sequencing of ER has resulted in more detailed understanding of structure and function, with the identification of variant forms in both tumours and normal, followed by the discovery that ER has two forms, the classical ER-and ER-. Analyses of both forms in normal and preneoplastic breast will be important for our understanding of the role of ER in the development of breast cancer and its possible prevention.

As oestrogen is associated with most of the epidemiological risk factors for breast cancer, the number and distribution of oestrogen receptor positive (ER+) cells could have a bearing on the development of the disease. ER+ cells were thus studied in the normal breast and in the spectrum of in situ p

We have examined the relative levels of oestrogen receptor beta (ER␀) mRNA in 94 breast cancer specimens using a semi-quantitative RT-PCR procedure. We correlated its expression with ER␣ and various clinical, pathological and biochemical features of the disease. The level of ER␀ mRNA expression in t

Human intestinal trefoil factor (hITF) is a small cysteine-rich protein expressed in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Its sequence is related to that of other trefoil peptides including the pNR-2/pS2 protein, which is regulated by oestrogen in breast cancer. This study was designed to investigate wh

We have carried out a quantitative analysis of ER-alpha and ER-beta mRNA expression in normal (n = 11) and breast cancer (n = 112) tissues using a real-time (Taq-Man) PCR assay. Expression of ER-beta mRNA variants has also been studied by triple-primer PCR assay. ER-alpha mRNA levels in normal breas

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a recently identified survival factor for several populations of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system that also regulates kidney development. To study the roles of GDNF in the regulation of tooth innervation and formation, we anal
