Odisseas, Yunan mitolojisinde İthaka kralıdır. Laertes ile Antikleia'nın oğludur. Odisseas, Truva'nın düşmesinden on yıl sonra Odisseas'un İthaka'ye evine dönünceye kadar maceralarını anlatır. İliada 10 yıl süren Truva Savaşı, Odysseia, 10 yıl boyunca Odisseas'un başından geçenlerden ibarettir. İliada, bir olayı, Odisseas ise bir kişinin destanını anlatır. Truva Destanında olaylar birbirini izleyecek şekilde anlatılır. Hâlbuki, Odisseas'da olaylar anılar, geriye dönüşler, atlamalarla canlandırılır. Batı dillerindeki Ulysses veya Ulis'in türediği Latince Ulyxes, yiğidin bir Yunan lehçesinden alınmış adıdır. Çok zeki bir adam olduğu varsayılır. Düşmanlarını zekası ve kurnazlığı ile yendi. Penelope ile evlendiği sıralarda Truva Savaşı başlayınca savaşa gitmemek için çeşitli bahaneler ileri sürdü ancak savaşa gitmek zorunda kaldı. Truva Atı fikri de Odisseas'a aitti. Zeka tanrıçası tarafından çok sevilen kahraman Poseidon'un kinini kazandığından Truva dönüşü başına birçok belalar gelmiştir ve belalarla birlikte yaşadığı dönüş mitolojide bir nevi insanlığın öyküsü olarak bilinir, çünkü insanlara özgü zayıf yönler çerçevesinde gelişen olaylar anlatılır.
