✦ Synopsis

The authors describe a new general synthesis of cis-,&ethylene aldehydes : the alkylation of 1-methoxy-1-buten-3-yne to 1-methoxy-1-alken-3-ynes followed by addition of methanol produces l,l-dimethoxy-3-alkynes. The catalytical reduction of these compounds to l,l-dimethoxy-3-alkenes followed by mild acidic hydrolysis yieIds cis-p-ethylene aldehydes.

The following new aldehydes are described : cis-/3-pentenal, cis-fi-nonenal, cis$decenal and cis-6-dodecenal. All these aldehydes give off strong pleasant odours.
