As 1984 approaches I become increasingly convinced that Onvell's prophecies are to be acted out in space. By this I do not intend to suggest that the war between the three powers of Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia which is the backdrop to this classic satire will be conducted in space-though this may h a p p e w b u t rather that the satellite era has given form to 'Newspeak'.

All new disciplines develop their own vocabularies but the remote sensing community is particularly adept at generating terms that seem to imply the opposite of the truth. The best example is ground rrurh. This term suggests that satellites 'lie' whilst surface-derived data are always correct. Such an interpretation camouflages more than it reveals.
