Worldng with a purified tryptophanase of Escherichia coli, WOOD et al. (1947) have shown that indole, pyruvic acid and ammonia are the products of tryptophane cleavage by this enzyme and that pyridoxal phosphate is required as the cofactor. The inducible nature of this enzyme as well as the factors affecting enzyme induction have been the subject matter of a number of investigators (
