Melt flow plays a significant role in structure formation and redistribution of solid phase in liquid during solidification processes. The effect of melt flow along the solidification front on macro-and microstructure of an aluminium alloy is investigated. An electromagnetic pump is used as a tool t

✦ Synopsis
The Portevin-Le Chatelier effect (discontinuous plastic flow) has been investigated in an A1-4.5wt.%Mg alloy as a function of three different microstructural conditions. Transmission electron microscopy has been used to relate differences in the observed macroscopic deformation characteristics to dislocation distributions in specimens before and after tensile straining. It is demonstrated that differences in initial yield behaviour are determined by the availability of preexisting dislocations and that the characteristic yield drop in annealed material arises from the mass creation of mobile dislocations. Pre-macro-yield features are also rationalized in terms of observed local dislocation activity.
