✦ Synopsis

We employed ultrasonic techniques in order to gain information on the R-curve behavior of Al_,O~ ceramics. A reduction in the sound velocity has been observed at the crack tip of subcritically grown cracks. The measurements were carried out by time-of-flight measurements, and by evaluating the V(z) curves obtained from a scanning acoustic microscope. Furthermore, we could also observe effects related to the interaction of serrated crack walls by in situ experiments in the scanning acoustic microscope.

*Our samples were manufactured by Feldmtihle AG, Plochingen, F.R.G., (B40) and at the University of Dortmund (Dr. R. Steinbrech, N28). They have been characterized by K. B~ir, G. Kleist and T. Lexen, Kernforschungsanlage Jiilich (unpublished).

## Abstract We present a combined multiphoton–acoustic microscope giving collocated access to the local morphological as well as mechanical properties of living cells. Both methods relay on intrinsic contrast mechanisms and dispense with the need of staining. In the acoustic part of the microscope,

Parameters for the fracture mechanics of thick film materials are scarce in the literature. One reason is that for many such materials it is very difficult to produce a bulk specimen as required for most standard tests. This paper describes an alternative method for measuring the fracture resistance
