Received 9 August 1979 timan spectra of aqueous ;IUium chloride solutions are obtained in both liquid state at room temperature and glassy state. Lag spectral chh~~es are obserwd on going from liquid to glassy stsc and xre discussed in terms of ionic equdlbtium reztctions.

✦ Synopsis
Under UV or 21375 cm-' excitation the EuW,,Oz; ion shows luminescence from both the 'D, and 5D, excited states in H,O or D,O at room temperature. For the visible excitation in D,O the 5Do state is populated exclusively from the 'D, state. The lifetimes of these states in dilute D,O (H,O) solution are 3.8X10m3 s (240~10-~ s) and 7.1 x 10e6 s (3.4~10~~ s) respectively.
