✦ Synopsis

A multiple-hole structure with a center hole of more than 20% depth was observed in the persistent hole-burning 4 Ž . 4 3 q spectroscopy for the F 1 -I transition of the Nd doped silicate glass fiber at 1.5 K using a diode laser. The 3r2 9 r2

multiple-hole structure was attributed to the hyperfine interaction between the effective electron spin and the nuclear spin of the Nd 3q ion. The hole grow and decay processes were observed to be logarithmic time-dependent. Finally the demonstration of optical memory was presented.
