✦ Synopsis
A stationary spatial distribution of non-equilibrium between the vibrational and the rotational/translational modes of Nz was established in the free-convective flows generated in a cylindrical cell by an axial, horizontal, incandescent filament. The non-equilibrium was detected and mapped using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. The investigation illustrates a new approach to the study of high-temperature chemical kinetics and gas-phase transport properties called recirculating flow relaxation spectrometry.
It also highlights conditions where errors may arise in thermometry based on the spectroscopy of N2.
