Abstract
The longβlasting phosphorescence properties of Y~2~O~2~S:RE^3+^ (RE = Lu, Gd) phosphors and the undoped Y~2~O~2~S matrix are systematically investigated in this paper. The brightness and persistent time of the defectβrelated emission around 540 nm in the undoped Y~2~O~2~S matrix are greatly enhanced when doped with Lu^3+^ or Gd^3+^ ions. Thermoluminescence measurement has been performed and the possible mechanism of this phenomenon was also investigated on the basis of the thermoluminescence data. Based on the time dependence of the phosphorescence intensity, the longβlasing phosphorescence in this system is considered to be due to the thermally activated electronβhole recombination at shallow traps.
