✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The long‐lasting phosphorescence properties of Y~2~O~2~S:RE^3+^ (RE = Lu, Gd) phosphors and the undoped Y~2~O~2~S matrix are systematically investigated in this paper. The brightness and persistent time of the defect‐related emission around 540 nm in the undoped Y~2~O~2~S matrix are greatly enhanced when doped with Lu^3+^ or Gd^3+^ ions. Thermoluminescence measurement has been performed and the possible mechanism of this phenomenon was also investigated on the basis of the thermoluminescence data. Based on the time dependence of the phosphorescence intensity, the long‐lasing phosphorescence in this system is considered to be due to the thermally activated electron–hole recombination at shallow traps.
