✦ Synopsis


We report the observation of the C-H stretch modes of monolayers of methanol and pentadecanoic acid adsorbed on glass and water using sum-frequency generation. This is a new surface spectroscopic probe, akin to second-harmonic generation for its surface specificity, but potentially more useful for its molecular selectivity.

We present the first application of infrared-visible sum-frequency generation to studies of liquid/solid interfaces. The spectra in the CH stretch region of a saturated monolayer of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) adsorbed at various interfaces bound by a fused silica substrate were measured and comp
