Professor Takekiyo Matsuo of Osaka University, a leader in the expanding science of mass spectrometry, died on 25 February 1999. His contributions ranged over a very wide variety of fields covering short-lived nuclei, clusters, biomolecules, and extra-terrestrial compounds, amongst others. His life-long research on ion optics yielded mass spectrometers with high resolving power which formed the fundamental basis for these pioneering applications. He
