✦ Synopsis

Peter Campbell died on February 7, 2005, following illness resulting from a tragic accident. At the time of his death he was Professor Emeritus at University College London, and although long since retired, he was working practically full time. He made major contributions to research in biochemistry. Notably, he was the first person to synthesize a completely identified protein using a subcellular preparation, and he was a member of the group that first showed the importance of autoimmunity in human disease. Perhaps his most enduring legacy, however, comes from his pivotal role in the foundation of FEBS, his chairmanship of the Committee on Education of IUB (later IUBMB) and the teaching and advisory role that followed from it, and his support through the Scientific Apparatus Recycling Scheme (SARS) 1 of Eastern European laboratories impoverished by the economic chaos following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He also founded Biochemical Education, the predecessor of BAMBED! Early Days-Campbell
