โฆ Synopsis
The death of Doctor James E. Keeler, Director of the Lick Observatory, came as a startling and unexpected blow to his friends and associates here, no less than to the astronomical world. It occurred at San Francisco on the 1 2 ~~ of August, the immediate cause having been a series of strokes of Apoplexy, aggravated by Pleurisy and by long standing affection of the heart.
None of these symptoms had been supposed to be of serious character, by himself, or by others. He had recently found it advisable to consult a physician in San Jose, the nearest city, and had undergone treatment for the Pleurisy. This had occasionally given him some difficulty in breathing, when ascending the short upper slopes of the mountain, but had not been considered as immediately of a dangerous nature.
H e was returning to San Francisco, on the development of troublesome symptoms, when the first serious stroke came. He was however, in possession of all his bodily and intellectual faculties, up to within a few hours of the end.
